We are still noticing problems with caterpillars dying due to parasitic flies. A few Monarchs however, are still making it through the winter here. Two chrysalids that were attached to a birdbath were beginning to turn black. Our temperatures just dropped as a cold front moved through and should stay cold all week! In the past, we've observed that the Monarchs will not emerge in cold weather. Today we made the decision to carefully remove the chrysalids from the birdbath and attach them under a lamp inside. After only six hours near the light and warmth of a 40w bulb, the beautiful Monarchs emerged! Now all we need is the 70 degree weather back again!
