Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 01/20/2004

Number: 1

Here in the Fingerlakes of New York I regularly observe numerous robins all winter long in the woods outside of town. These robins are in large groups and are seen eating berries, wild grapes, seeds usually in the thickets on the edge of the hardwoods. I have seen as many as one hundred robins when sunny on a snow plowed road picking at the shoulder possibly eating grain that has blown from the farmers trucks and exposed vegitation and possibly emerging insects. Come spring they move into town preferring the grass lawns eating insects and earthworms getting ready for breeding season and defending their territory. This happens usually before the last snow. Most people do not see the wintering robins because they don't get out in the woods during winter. The first robins they do see is when they make their move into town on their lawns.
