As an enornmous full orange moon rose to cast it's glow over our snow covered landscape, I heard the first calls of the Great Horned owl, Rufous Bobo, echo thru our gulley - Spring is offically on it's way! February's moon is the Owl Moon, according to the native Americans of this area. What a cold, forbidding time to start mating and nest tending! In the deep stillness and cold, the owl notes rose and fell, a lonely hopeful sound as the moon rode higher. It reminded me of the all night concert several years ago. "He" sat at one end of our A-frame's roof and "She" sat at the other! Talk about a hooten-nanny! It was not a night for sleep! Nothing detered their loving conversations! With food supplies running low, mice and voles began to appear above ground, easy targets against the snow. This must be why the owls began their families so early.
