All Other Signs of Spring

Late yesterday afternoon, my husband and I went for a walk along one of the many beautiful nature trails here in Reston. At our customary turn-around point, I was completely surprised to discover that a handful of Skunk Cabbage flowers were in bloom in the bog on the side of the trail that receives the most sunlight! They were in shallow, open water that was rimmed with ice and snow. When I noticed them it was a brisk 30 degrees. I even took some pictures of it as I was so amazed. (Where most of the other cabbages grow the bog was still iced over.)
