I live in a rural community on the edge of a 300 acre orchard, which is on a hill about 600 feet high. As usual during mid February, I saw the first wave of hundreds of Robins. In any immediate area of say,a group of 40 trees, there were 10-20 robins in each tree. A fabulously surreal and spiritual experience I wait for and savor each spring.
They were sitting in the trees and foraging in the snowless areas directly under the trees. Presumably looking for worms and definitely picking at the fallen rotting apples. Lovely sunny day, cold in the 20's, very low wind.
They seem to stay around in increasing numbers for several weeks. I recall the flocks seem to dissapate in late April. I've been observing for 4 years.
