Earthworm (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/25/2004

Number: 1

I was shifting around some leaf litter in my garden bed, and under one of the oak leaves I moved was my first earthworm of the year! Even though it was only about 30 degrees out at the time, the worm was right there near the top of the soil's surface, presumably being kept warm and insulated by its (former)covering of loose soil and dead leaves. It quickly regained shelter under another leaf...I am so reassured of Spring's arrival now that the ground is finally thawing and the worms are emerging!
