Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 01/25/2004

Number: 1

My class of 3-4 learning disabilities have been amazed to find both monarch caterpillar and monarch butterfly in our school butterfly garden. As this is our first year with the garden and the temperatures have been below freezing I expected the caterpillar would freeze. We continued to see buterfly lay eggs into December. By Mid January and the first freeze we expected to go out and find the caterpillar dead. Instead they were alive and eating the seed pods as there were no green leaves or leaves at all for that matter. WE saw monarchs flying and found chrysalis that were formed under benches, on swing sets and even on the fence. WE brought in two milkweed plants that were resprouting after being devoured by some hungry caterpillar some weeks prior. We collected some 15 monarch caterpillar to attempt a rescue from the freezing temps. They consummed their small source of food and began to crawl around the room. At this point, I decided that we'd have to take the ones back out
