In my opinion the number of overwintering monarchs has been higher than
usual in Calhoun County this year. I have seen monarchs every day I have
been outside. Several still visit my blooming pentas and other butterfly
plants in Port O'Connor. But other Calhoun County locations I visit
regularly like the Seadrift area, Magnolia Beach/Indianola area (the [Texas
Ornithological Society's] Magic Ridge sanctuary), Matagorda Island also have
overwintering monarchs. In early 2004 the numbers in my yard were especially
high with sometimes over 20 individuals. By now numbers have dwindled down
to 2 or 3.
