I am a science teacher for grades K-2 in a low socioeconomic area. In the fall 2003 my students planted tulips and other bulbs that we won through a dutch blub grant last year. They are counting the days until spring on their own because they are so excited about seeing their bulbs grow. I also got them involved with Cornell Univ. Bird Watch and Bird Feeder programs. They have been doing it since last year and have developed a personal interest in the birds in their urban area. This year we are planting butterfly plants to try and attract butterflies. We are also worm composting to benefit the plants we have planted. My goal is to open their eyes to a world outside of their urban dwelling and to develop a connection to the environment. I am very please so far. My students, as young as they are, are showing a sense of pride in taking care of the limited wildlife in the area, cleaning up their environment and being a part of nature.
