Monarch's in "Middle Earth" a.k.a. New Zealand

My favorite time of the year is spring; it heralds new growth, new blossoms, new babies, and, most importantly, the return of my favorite butterflies. I get a little depressed as winter comes along as I know that my butterfly friends are on their way south to warmer climes. I always hold out a little hope that the stragglers will leave behind precious eggs that will hatch, eat my remaining milkweed, and even turn into a chrysalis. Because the dreaded wasps are gone, they get to live outside on the live plants, their survival rate is so much better. This past winter was so mild, I had my last butterfly hatch on February 16th, since it snapped cold, I brought her inside to safely complete her transformation, releasing her as soon as her wings were dry.

Now, my father was sick in my native homeland of New Zealand, so I jumped on a plane and in a 24-hour period I left my home in Houston, Texas and flew halfway round the world to arri
