Since we had been seeing Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in Port Lavaca earlier, we told the other teachers in Victoria to get their feeders up. Our second grade teacher got her feeder up early this morning and told us this afternoon that it was visited in minutes by a RT hummer. She and her husband have planted native scarlet salvia in the backyard and RT hummers were nectaring on it all day. We have had squalls all day coming in from the west as a front approaches and there has almost been a "mini dropout" of hummers. This has been the first big week for Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds down here, they are being reported up and down the Texas coast and at least a hundred miles inland this week. We might check this afternoon to see if the stock of feeders in the stores have gone down, shelves were full last Sunday!!!
