Milkweed (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/29/2004

Number: 1

After returning from a two week Spring Break, my fourth grade students were relieved to finally spot some tiny shoots of new milkweed where the old stalks were. We have about 20 milkweed plants beginning to show new growth in our "caterpillar cafe" (our bed of butterfly host plants). We're ready for the Monarchs to begin arriving in our area in the next month! We also had a Black Swallowtail butterfly that formed its chrysalis last fall in our classroom. It emerged while we were away, but was healthy and we released it to happily nectar on our spring flowers today!
