Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/08/2004

Number: 1

I observed and photographed a single female Monarch Butterfly on March 8 at
Choke Canyon SP. It was perched on some brush along a birding trail through
trees and brush. It was a breezy day and this location was somewhat
protected from the wind. I saw no evidence of an attempt to deposit eggs or
to feed. I saw nothing that I would recognize as Milkweed in the vicinity.

I was struck by the prime condition of this speciman. It's condition seemed
too good for one having migrated to Mexico, wintered there and then flown to
Texas. It also seemed too early for the first generation for this year.
