Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/10/2004

Number: 1

Larva found on wild milkweed growing along Highway 16 northwest of Helotes and San Antonio. There is plenty of milkweed in the area this year. I have not seen adult butterflies yet. My students (gifted 1-5th grade) have collected 28 eggs and hatched that many larva in the classroom. Last year we hatched and released 968 butterflies including 911 Monarchs and 57 Queens. Each release was photographed and the photo and a student letter weresent to a family who lost someone in the 9/11 terrorist attack. Our goal is to raise and release a butterfly for each of the 3006 people lost. It will take us a long time but the students enjoy the butterflies.
