Ice-Out

Date: 04/25/2004

Number: 1

The ice is moving on the Innoko River! Because of our warm temperatures this is the earliest our ice out has been in people's memory. The Innoko is more of an interior river running about 600 miles until it reaches it's mouth at the Yukon River. Our village is about 60 miles up from the mouth. We rely on the river year round for migratory fish and travel. Shageluk is the last remaining village on the Innoko. Historically speaking, the Innoko was the entry river to the Iditarod Gold deposit area.
