All Other Signs of Spring

It looks like our long winter is over. This week the temperature hit 60 degrees for the first time since last September, and today it was 70. Two weeks ago there was still a covering of snow on the ground, and today the only snow that's left is from the piles the plows built up during the winter. Usually we have a long, muddy break-up period, but this year the ground soaked up all the melt-water within a week. Maybe the ground didn't freeze because we had such heavy early snows. The Moose River opened up on April 23rd; the ducks, swans, and grebes are back enjoying it. The trees are even starting to bud; there's a tinge of green in the woods. Time to put away the skis and bring out the kayaks.
