Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/05/2004

Number: 1

April was fairly mild for us, with low average rainfall.
This first week of May has been very hot...84 degrees on some days which
is a little unusual for southern Indiana. Conditions have been fairly
windy with chance of thunderstorms almost daily. Milkweed is up
here. In the really sunny spots with little foliage around, the milkweed
is about a foot tall. In the more shaded areas and areas where the
milkweed is crowded in, growth is about 8" or less. I have seen several
swallowtail butterflies, but not monarchs. However, three students
reported seeing monarchs, so we sent this report. I also teach at another
school in the area, and students there also reported some sightings of
monarchs. So, I would say the migration is not full force here yet, but
probably an early trickle.
