Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/09/2004

Number: 1

We saw 13 monarchs at Grandview Prairie, Hempstead County, on Sunday, May 9. Most were flying over areas of A. virdis and appeared to be guarding a territory - not laying eggs. One was rather faded and old, but the others were bright and new looking. This behavior mimics behavior we have seen in past years when the males came first and seemed to claim a territory and then the females would come and lay eggs. What we saw usually occurs three or four weeks earlier than it did this year.
