We spotted the first of three female ruby-throats on the 16th of May. Two males are observed daily and were first reported prior to as well as on May 6th, in the Lourdes College Life Lab's Wildlife Garden. One of the three females appears to be "Portia", who arrived on the Garden scene in 2002 as a juvenile and is noticeably heavyset for a hummingbird. No doubt this is due to the fact that she is often seen either perched on a feeder for long periods, never hovering, or sitting in a nearby tree. Last year she returned to successfully nest as an adult and we presume Portia will be nesting again in 2004 either in or near the Wildlife Garden. The other two females are much trimmer and one is a slightly smaller bird. Wondering if the smaller female might be Portia's offspring from 2003?
