Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/03/2004

Number: 1

The day I saw the first monarch it was a somewhat
breezy, but not windy day. The monarch was nectaring
on a bush we have that gets white flowers and later
red berries, which the cedar waxwings take care of.
Sorry I don't know what the name of the bush is. I
also had a male monarch in my garden this week,
spending a lot of time on the flowers. I stood
quietly enough that he came close and I observed it
was a male. That day it was 93 and sunny here.

Next week we will begin collecting butterflies for
our butterfly house at Beaver Creek Reserve in Fall
Creek. We already have an assortment of caterpillers,
but no monarchs as of yet. Our milkweed is a little
slow this year, and it seemed the monarchs were also
slow in returning. Wonder if it's connected.
