Hummingbird, Rufous (FIRST)

Date: 06/04/2004

Number: 1

It was amazing to watch the hummingbird perch on the feeder and then tilt it's head back to swallow the nectar. Then on June 7 I noticed two different hummingbirds. One just hung in the air. If I watch out the window long enough, about every five minutes, the bird returns. After searching on the website, I learned that I need to clean the feeder about every 3 to 4 days. Ants are also beginning to make their journey up and down the clothes line pole where I have the bird feeder hanging. At first the feeder was hanging next to a regular bird feeder enticing Sparrows. That was when I sighted my first hummingbird. I then moved the hummingbird feeder to the other pole. Right away the hummingbird swooped down to where the feeder should have been, and then dodged on over the feeders new location. This is so exciting, I am forcing my family to wait and watch for these beautiful creatures.
