Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/08/2004

Number: 1

Yesterday, June 8th, a surprise visitor appeared - the first monarch of the
season. (Late compared to May 18th several years ago.) She was in excellent
condition and was kind enough to leave over 2 dozen eggs on my
just-sprouting milkweed plants (the highest plant would be about six inches,
but she didn't miss those that were just poking their tips through the
soil). The eggs are now in safe-keeping as I intend to raise these with a
group of retirees at the local assisted-living centre.
For those that would like a little more "detail", I can tell you that it
was the first "muggy" day here in Elliot Lake, with a humidex reading of
about 35 C., winds gusting from the south west up to 40 k/hr and a ceiling
of 20,000 feet (I do love the way they mix up the weather reports here with
metric & imperial! ;-) Great day for flying, obviously! Now, as soon as I
can find my bug jacket I'll check all my milkweed patches around town and
see what else the winds brought in.
