The date is uncertain. I did not write it down. It was, however, in late fall of either 1988 or 1989.

It is the only, for sure, migrating fall Monarch I have seen. My wife & I were driving towards Yosemite N.P. east of Tioga Pass. The road was open later than usual that year because it hadn't snowed at all. The road followed a draw, however, it was very crooked, due to side draws. I sighted a Monarch, flying straight up the draw. I watched it for a short time and then I had to drive up a side draw. When I came back to the main draw, there it was again. This happened 2 more times.

When I got to the top, a ranger had just fastened a cable across the road. I got out, hoping to be permitted to pass. He refused. As we talked, that Monarch came by, heading through Tioga Pass.

While it was flying up the draw, the Monarch seemed to be flying about 15 feet above the ground, however, he was at least 20 feet above the ground. If I had to guess its speed, I'd guess 10 MPH. He flew abou
