The first monarch butterfly of 2004 emerged today, a healthy female! I saw a monarch laying eggs in our yard on 6-26-04, & collected the 2nd instar cats around July 4th, for hand rearing. We have many monarch predators here, including ants and yellow jacket wasps. When I notice monarch cats feeding on our milkweed plants, I collect them and set up a small enclosure on our back porch, where they are fed and raised to adulthood. At this time, we have n=9 monarchs in the chrysalis stage, and n=5 2nd instar monarch cats feeding on milkweed leaves.
