I observed the first adult monarch today, since the spring migration, fluttering over a meadow where it was investigating red clover and other wild flowers. It was very lively, fresh looking, and alone. After watching it for some time, it did not appear to be in migration mode but just interested in its local surroundings. For the first time, I was without success this summer in locating a single monarch larva despite a bumper crop of milkweed.
