A lone Monarch flew through the meadow, then through the bank of flowers next to the Butterfly House at the Adirondack Park Visitor's Interpretive Center. It came and went so quickly that we couldn't even get outdoors fast enough to determine its sex. Normally we'd have seen dozens of Monarchs by now, but only this sighting, of one -- what a distressing year. We combed the surrounding area to come up with a couple of females, who (luckily!) had mated, and laid eggs in our Butterfly House. And then one male! We have several caterpillars munching, and a few chrysalids, to show visitors. All our guests ask where the Monarchs are, and say that they can't find any signs of them -- except for one couple from southern PA, who said that they have lots. What are other places finding?
