Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/05/2004

Number: 1

It looked to be a bleak summer in Wisconsin for monarchs and almost all kinds of butterflies, but it has really picked up the past month. Our school butterfly garden held one lone caterpillar all summer until August. Now anywhere you look you can find either caterpillars or chrysalises. They are all over. Same holds true for the clover fields we have been tagging in. The caterpillars are all over on the milkweed. One of us tags and the other catches caterpillars. We have 39 tags left, but 15 of those are spoken for due to caterpillars and chrysalises that we have caught. So I guess the report from Shawano, Wisconsin is that the monarchs have laid a lot of eggs and there should be a lot of migratory butterflies from this neck of the woods.
