I drove straight south from Abilene TX in the middle of the state to Eagle Pass on the Rio Grande from 11:40 to 4:30--a distance of 300 miles almost due South. During that time I observed 12 monarchs all traveling low to the road and these were all moving due east when I observed them. They were quartering a fairly stiff north breeze and flying between 2 and 15' above the highway.
