Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/23/2004

Number: 1

I have a screen tent FULL of monarch butterflies that I have been breeding this summer in preparation for our fall monarch project at the JC Caruso School in Keansburg, NJ. Throughout September, I have spotted several "rougue" monarchs in the garden of my home, nectaring on the late blooming flowers, including my tropical milkweed. Several young cats have been found among the milkweed as well. With the exception of only one monarch earlier this summer, September has been the first sighting at my home this year. I have also seen half dozen or so at the beach, flying high along the boardwalk late afternoons. One day, several were hanging out near the top of an apartment building across from the boardwalk in Long Branch. It looked to me as if they were hovering close to a large heating unit on the building. One was sighted clinging to the building itself.
