Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/25/2004

Number: 1

Hello from central Canada. Although I live in a city (Winnipeg), I transformed our backyard into a native prairie garden last year's Spring of 2003, and was rewarded by a great number of monarch butterflies who visited in August to feed on the wild flowers and lay eggs on the 5 milkweeds I had planted for them (unsure they would find them at this location!), and later 6 caterpillars were found feeding on the milkweed!

This year, I planted more milkweed, seeing as last year's monarchs used them... but I haven't seen one butterfly nor caterpillar, and I must say it's the very 1st year that I haven't seen at least one monarch during Summer in this province! I've inquired with everyone I know who lives in the rural areas of MB, and they all say the same thing... not a single sighting! (Very unusual as we've seen 100's at a time during past migrations).
