Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/11/2004

Number: 1

5:45-6:30 a.m.
59.7dF, heavy dew, no wind, sickle moon, Venus bright
coyotes in full chorus, tenor leading the pack
bumblebees irate,
monarchs tranquil and scattered through huisache (yellow acacia).

Someone had disturbed the gathering place in the cul-de-sac of ash trees late into the clustering, probably between 7:30 and 8:30 last night. I found one butterfly on the ground covered with dew. Trees were basically empty. I netted about 30 from the 3 clusters I swiped at, and they were in periphery trees. The cul-de-sac empty explains why there were at least 350 in the trees behind my house and small roosts and singletons in the mesquite trees across the street from the primary gathering place. I'd estimate at least 500 in the half-acre wood.
