Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/10/2004

Number: 1

The Monarchs are really coming through now. In the 35 minutes it took to
drive from Uvalde to Camp Wood, I saw well over 400 Monarchs between 2:15
and 2:50 p.m. They are coming from the North and going West to Southwest.
They are all flying only about 5 feet off the ground which means a lot are
being killed by the cars on the road because the butterflies are so low.

We have a strong North wind today, so I don't know if they're just riding
the wind or not.

What I saw today is different from the last week when I would see one or two
a day. Those that I saw then really looked as if they had no sense of
direction at all.
