Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/09/2004

Number: 1

We had a huge number of Monarchs
migrating over our ranch about 12 miles north of Junction from
4:30 to 6:30 pm on Saturday 10/9 and then again in the morning on 10/10. On
Saturday, they came nonstop for the time period listed; they flew at every
imaginable elevation from eye level to out of sight unless you had binocs.
I cannot even begin to estimate a number, but at one point I counted 23
passing overhead in a matter of seconds, and that was typical for everywhere
else as far as we could see. The next morning, similar numbers were seen
for about an hour and a half as Monarchs roosting on our place and the
surrounding area took flight and passed through. All in all, a really neat
experience.
