On Friday, October 8, 2004, while driving from Houston to Marfa, we saw hundreds of migrating monarchs crossing Highway 90 near Lake Amistad (one of the largest lakes in Texas found near Del Rio). This sighting occurred at 2:30 p.m. (central time) on Highway 90 as it passes over the southern edge of Lake Armisted. The monarchs were moving from north to south on their way to Mexico. This was a delightful sight but a bit unnerving as we tried to dodge the butterflies with our car. Fortunately there was not much traffic on the road.
