Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/12/2004

Number: 1

Yesterday morning there were 2 monarchs in the trees, this morning 11. If
you asked me to rate the numbers I've seen this year 10 days into the
migration (for this site), I'd say we're seeing consistently seeing less
than 1/3 of what we have seen in past years.

10-12-01 River of monarchs over the house--5580 monarchs an hour from 11 to
3 p.m.

10-19-02 Just went out to see the REAL MIGRATION! A front came through over
the last 6 hours and the
monarchs are staging out of here in remarkable numbers.
I moved north away from the clusters still in the trees and
counted in one minute 15 monarchs coming
from further north at 60' or better above ground.
About a 1000 still in the trees, but getting ready to
depart.

10-17-03 Just went about checking the trees and 50 yards west has about 850
to 1000--more dispersed
among the branches than last night's clusters. Front yard
has only about 200, but population
in the back yard is up to around 175. Scattered individuals
throughout.

10-19-04 I'd estimate that the total number of monarchs seen in the last 10
days could not excede 1400 individuals.

10-20-04 ZIP! No monarchs this morning.
