Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/21/2004

Number: 1

Monarch Butterflies are sparse in our area for this time of year. Usually a hundred or so taking nectar from our lantana and flowering smaller eucalyptus species, during the end of October. May be due to the recent destruction of 957 acres of eucalyptus globulus that they roosted in 1 mile north of my property. There are many Painted Ladies, various skipper species and whites, along with a few Western Pygmy Blues, abundant on our property which is usual for this time of year. One mile east, a private residence had over 30 monarch caterpillars feeding on a non-native milkweed growing in their garden, during the end of September. I wish California would take wintering Monarch habitat conservation as serious as we expect Mexico to. Mass eucalyptus groves are being clear-cut for development.
