Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/24/2004

Number: 1

Major flow heading mostly southerly along the length of AL from the GA
border on I59 to I459 around the southerly side of Birmingham across to
Tuscaloosa in another sw route, on into MS.

The largest flow was one every 50 yards in the southwestern quadrant of
the loop around Birmingham. Before that, they were flying one every 100
to 300 yards. (I still relate the old fashion way.)

The flow lightened up to no further sightings after Tuscaloosa. (My
guess is they are flying south and hitting the coastal breezes to gain
uplift)

The clouds were awesome and I photographed these for many miles into
Meridian, MS.

Also seen flying about the same height, but stopping to nectar, were
cloudless suphurs. The Monarchs tend to be at 20 to 30 feet, but some
were windshield height. The frits tend to fly much slower, almost at
grass height.
