Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/10/2004

Number: 1

My first observation of Monarch Butterflies was at my parent’s house in Hurst Texas on Sunday October 10. It was 3:30 p.m. and the temperature was about 80 degrees and it was partly cloudy. I was in the backyard and saw two butterflies sitting on a shrub known as a Buford Holly, a bush that normally has a white flower but known were present on the day I was there, and then a third one flying back and forth between a couple of rose bushes and nectaring from the flowers. The two on the shrub were very inactive and pretty much stayed still the entire time I observed them, but the third was very active. It was mostly black and yellow and spent less than five minutes on each flower before flying around and landing on another one. I learned later that the roses were still in bloom because the fall weather in the area had remained so warm.
