I brought a young butterfly weed into my greenhouse around the end of Nov. On Dec 1st a caterpiller was making a meal of it. By Dec 17th the chrysalis was formed. Sometime shortly before Christmas eve the butterfly hatched, just in time for a 70 year snow storm. Fortunately it was safe and well fed in my greenhouse. On Dec 27th, when the weather turned warm once again, it was released into the open.
