We had our first real cold snap in 2 years last night and that really got the birds moving around today for food. I am not sure how the photos turned out but I tried to get them in my tree gorging on the berries.
I would estimate there were close to 200 robins and 30-40 cedar waxwings going after the berries. I noticed for the past 2 weeks there has been one lone robin "guarding" the berries from any waxwing intruders who wanted a quick snack. That robin was viscous! He did not tolerate so much as a foot on his berry limbs. Most those berries are gone now but they are still scavengering on the ground for dropped goodies.
It warmed up a lot this afternoon so I took a book and my digital outside. I looked at birds more than I read. I noted this one robin sitting in the red cedar tree. He/she sat there for well over an hour. I took several shots of it. He got very used to me just being there, as did the hummingbirds, who were coming in for their late afternoon carb fix before dark. The robin finally left and now at nearly 6 PM it is silent. Makes me excited to see what shows up tomorrow.
