Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 01/26/2005

Number: 1

Have never seen a wave of robins ever, let alone this time of year; they are everywhere! They are devouring the berries on our flowering crab and that of the neighbors, dropping many of the berries on the snow-covered ground, and are also flitting back and forth amongst the trees in the neighborhood. It's a little like watching "The Birds" movie -- very weird!

The robins arrived yesterday, the 26th; up to that time we had not seen even one. They are still here today, Jan 27. We estimate about 100 or so between our neighbor's tree and ours. They have pretty much picked both trees clean of berries and are leaving an incredible "doo doo" mess in our yard. The snow is peppered with droppings, particularly under our large maple tree on the other side of the walk which they seem to prefer as their dropping off spot!

Our weather has been strange this year -- very little snow up until last Friday when we received about a foot in the Stillwater area. Some parts of Minnesota have much more snow, especially in the Duluth region. Our temperatures have been erratic as well -- from below zero to the mid-40's above. I believe it was around 46 degrees the day before the robins arrived. Yesterday and today it started out in the 20's. As for wind, we've had some very windy days recently, but I can't recall exactly which days or how strong.
