Rufous ans Allen's Hummingbirds
January 22, and January 24, the first two male Allen's Hummingbirds arrived on our property for the 2005 breeding season. A week later than last year. They have been chasing each other, off and on for most of the day. Drinking from the pond falls and establishing their nectar plant territory. At this point, they are mainly taking nectar from the Australian native Grevilleas and Mexican bush sage. We don't have hummingbird feeders. A third hummingbird appeared on the 24 of January, and today I was able to get several close up photos to ascertain if it was indeed a Rufous Hummingbird. It lacked green on it's back and has only a slight amount on the crown and where the wings join at the shoulder. Nice healthy looking male.
