Bald Eagle

Date: 01/03/2005

Number: 1

My first Bald Eagle for 2005 was a juvenile perched on a rock in the middle of the St. Mary's River, which flows along the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It was joined by two adult BAEA about 3 minutes later. Sault Ste. Marie and area is usually a winter home for 5 to 15 BAEA. The key attraction to Bald Eagle in September and October is Salmon (at this time of year you can find Bald Eagle virtually along every stream and river feeding into Lake Superior and Lake Huron). When the last of the salmon have passed (mid November) and the river starts to freeze up they forage along the river but also actively hunt gulls and ducks. March migration is good time to see lots of BAEA congregated along the St. Mary's River. In March one could see over 30 in a morning.
