Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 01/24/2005

Number: 1

On Jan 24th I witnessed some strange behvior of robins. More than 100 decended on Busch Gardens Tampa Fl (where I work). Mixed in with them were tons of cedar waxwings Both species were devoring a palm tree seed. The seed from this particluar palm tree's seeds were small black and soft. The robins and waxwings pretty much striped the trees creating a shower of palm seeds in their wake. I was amazed, I know they just had to have come as a surge ahead of this nasty cold front. But I had never seen so many robins, nor have i ever wittnessed them traveling with the cedar waxwings. Not to mention devoring the palm seeds. After gorging themselves some of the birds sadly flew into the windows, some were injured and of course some died. One of my co-workers claimed the palm seeds can make some animals loopy, but i think it was because one or two or our resident hawks decided they were easy pickings and kept scattering the huge flock during their (the robin's and waxwing's) feeding f!
renzy.
