Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 01/30/2005

Number: 1

Thousands of robins moved through the Naples, Bonita Springs area (where I live) from about Jan 30, just after that major ice storm hit Georgia. They stayed until about February 6. They literally covered the ground, filled the sky with their seemingly erratic flight patterns, and people were just amazed to see so many! Most seem to be gone by now. Questions: Where could these robins have been coming from? Mexico? Guatemala? If so, did they fly across the Gulf -- and if so, were they not early for the "Gulf Express" by about a month? Or, could these robins have been part of the flocks that are in northern Florida normally during the winter, but with the advance into Florida of the cold from up north, have pushed farther south to find food? At first, the robins here were feeding on palm berries, Brazilian pepper, and then just before leaving our area, they gathered in large numbers on lawns, open field areas to pick at the ground -- I did not see any pulling worms from the gro!
