Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/15/2005

Number: 1

Two Monarch Butterflies came through on 2/15/05. The weather on that day was warm (80 degrees) and sunny. The day before had been warm but was very windy.

The butterflies were definitely Monarchs. Yesterday (2/23/05) I went to Barksdale, Texas which is not far from Camp Wood. Four or five
Monarchs were fluttering across the cemetery. I cannot explain where these
Monarchs are coming from. Many were late coming through here last year--as
late as December. After a freeze when the flowers were gone, they ate
hummingbird food. I have heard reports that along the Nueces River there
are wintering Monarchs, but I cannot confirm that report. One other fact that may help. The Monarchs are coming from the southwest
and heading southeast.
