Tulips EMERGED

Date: 02/14/2005

Number: 1

Our first tulip emerged sometime over the weekend. It was two inches tall when we saw it for the first time. On each day this week, at least one additional tulip has appeared. We planted only 20 bulbs at school, but many students planted them at their homes as well.

Looking at the fraction of the total that have emerged, has been a great way to practice simplifing fractions, and finding other equivalent fractions as well. By Friday, February 18th we had 5 tulips with heights ranging from 5/16 of an inch to 2 13/16 inches tall. We are also measuring them metrically and making a table, so that we will be able to figure out, how much they are growing each day.
