Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/09/2005

Number: 1

As I was sitting inside my house (south Salem) just now, I heard bird noises
from the back yard that sounded like singing RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, so I
went out to see if they were just starlings. There were about 10 male RED-WINGED
blackbirds (no females that I saw) and probably 50 or more EUROPEAN
STARLINGS in the trees in the yard. The blackbirds were singing and
calling, and the starlings making their usual cacophony. This is noteworthy
because this is the first time in the 4-1/2 years that we've lived in this
house that we've ever seen Red-winged blackbirds in the yard, and probably
the most starlings we've had at once. Habitat is typical residential with
mature oaks and Douglas-firs. The starlings were mostly in the firs, and
the blackbirds were in an oak, although I couldn't see most of the birds in
the firs so there may have been more in there. Seems to be some sort of
movement going on.
