I have raised Monarchs through the winter here in south Louisiana. I'm still using newly sprouted milkweek shoots and capture about 2 new catepillars for my hatching aquarium a day.
I am capturing them from lots of Butterfly weed on my own property. At this time of year, there are red assasain bugs which eat the small catepillars. So I try to intecept the Monarchs before that happens. We have alternating cold and warm weather now. When it is warm, the Butterfly weed sprouts and new monarchs appear. But I have continued to cut sufficient amounts to keep the growing catepillars in the aquarim fed.
