Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 01/30/2005

Number: 1

It was cloudy, misty rain, and breezy this morning. I went to let my dog out and observed my Monarch chrysalis now had a full-grown Monarch butterfly attached to it! After a few hours, the sun came out and the weather improved. I kept watch over the butterfly and did some yard work. I suddenly noticed the butterfly was gone! I looked in the general area of the now abandoned chrysalis and found the butterfly on the ground. I let it crawl onto my hand. I observed it was a female. I took her to the blooming asclepias curassavicas. She stayed on my hand and took her first sips of nectar. What a moving experience. She gradually moved onto the blossoms herself and stayed in the sun for awhile. After about an hour, she landed on our roof then flew away. We wish her well.
